The other night I found this blog post from another blogger, the Brainy Business Babe, who wrote about how Medela bottles don’t truly hold the volume that we think they do. Intrigued, I checked my bottles, because we’re using Medela’s, and LOVE them. Little Bear eats about 6 oz (or so I thought) in one sitting now (she’s 6 months). I decided to try this experiment myself, but also wanted to try using some other bottles I had.
Here are MY results:
First, here’s my Pyrex liquid measuring cup, filled with 6oz (a teeny tiny bit over…oops).
I poured this 6oz of milk into each of the following baby bottles that we have used: a Medela, a Dr. Brown’s and a Nuk. What you’ll see will astonish you–NONE of these bottles show a correct 6oz amount!
WOW. I couldn’t believe it. How are ALL of them wrong?! True, it’s not too far off, but if someone is really needing to measure for their baby, then every little bit might count!
So, what should you do if you’re REALLY concerned about this? Obviously, consult your doctor. For me, I’m more shocked than I am worried. My baby hasn’t had any health concerns with feeding, so we’ve been lucky. We feed her according to her cues as to when she’s hungry and full. She’s in range of all healthy weight measurements, so I don’t feel the need to freak out about these bottles not being accurate. However, it is definitely an eye opener that just because a product shows a measurement, it doesn’t mean it’s 100% accurate. We all want to trust that companies are making products with truthful measurements, that everything has been tested and is safe, and that nothing was harmed in the making of said products we’re using. In reality, it’s not all fool-proof! Now, I’m sure these bottle companies aren’t purposely out to stick the wrong measurement on the bottle. And here’s a thought–what if my Pyrex liquid measuring cup is wrong?! That totally turns the tables around, huh?! (What I really mean by this, is can I blame my terrible cooking on the Pyrex measuring cups being inaccurate……)
Have you tested YOUR bottles? What did you find out?
If you like it, pin it!

It’s crazy right?! Like I said, I’m more surprised than worried or anything…if my little girl is eating well and all that, then I don’t care as much about the actually measurements. But it’s just weird ALL of them would be “wrong”?!

This is so crazy. We just finished with Medela bottles. Whoops to my kids…

Nah- I’m sure it’s fine! I’m still going to use mine! I love the Medela’s–I just like how easy they are to use!!

It’s just totally crazy that NONE of them would be right!!! It must be the Pyrex!! lol

Yes, so weird! Yeah, maybe someone would find it useful! Or just in general to know not everything is accurate–craziness!

Oh my gosh! That could definitely be a huge difference for some babies!

Wow. I never would have thought the measurements would be so off. Luckily, we never had a set amount to feed, but I probably would have talked to my doctor if I had seen this.

Yeah it’s nuts! I probably would have lost my mind if I knew this right in the beginning, but now i’m just like hey whatever, you eat enough and you’re growing in all the right ways! 😀

Wow! Amazing comparison. I was so sleep deprived with feeding twins around the clock I never even gave it a thought!

I can’t even imagine! Good thing you didn’t–at this point I’m like eh whatever but back when I was only a couple months in I may have freaked!!

Thanks for doing this! I was really hoping my post would prompt other moms to check their own bottles… and hopefully confirm that I’m not crazy 😆

I’m so glad you saw this!!! I wanted to tag you in the original post I saw on the FB thread, but couldn’t find it!!!! YES your post was amazing!!! Hope you didn’t mind me linking to you 🙂 NO you’re not crazy at all, and I checked mine and was like WHAT!? How is it possible NONE OF THESE are right?!?!! :O

Wow! That’s so crazy. I used the Medelas to measure out milk after pumping to freeze. I wonder if they are off. I should try this and see how far off they are.
